ROMA SALEYARDS

PROJECT TITLE:  Head Contractor - Roma Saleyards QLD - Sale Management

CLIENT:  Maranoa Regional Council

SCOPE OVERVIEW

Outcross has served as the head contractor at Roma Saleyards since 2021, delivering the full suite of operational functions that underpin Australia's largest cattle selling centre. Outcross oversees pre-sale processes, workforce management, NLIS compliance, sale day management and post-sale deliveries, ensuring safe, efficient and accurate livestock movements across every sale.

Operations are delivered by trained livestock handling teams using best-practice, low-stress techniques, supported by Outcross's mature WHS, welfare and compliance systems. This includes rigorous NLIS data integrity, structured receival and drafting workflows, and consistent oversight of livestock flow, penning and sale efficiencies. Outcross applies a data-driven approach to efficiency, optimising pen utilisation, labour planning, sale timing and operational logistics. This ensures predictable, high-quality sale delivery for agents, buyers, transport operators and producers.

Strong engagement with livestock agents, buyers and transport operators ensures coordinated operations, transparent communication and a consistently high standard of service across all sale activities.

Through this operational leadership, Roma Saleyards achieved a throughput of more than 360,000 head of cattle in the FY 26, reinforcing its position as a nationally significant livestock marketing centre.

WVLX - WESTERN VICTORIA LIVESTOCK EXCHANGE

PROJECT TITLE: Infrastructure Design Project - Consulting

CLIENT:  The RLX Group

SCOPE OVERVIEW

The new state‑of‑the‑art design of the Mortlake saleyards—Western Victoria Livestock Exchange (WVLX)— was constructed in 2017 and represents one of the most modern, efficient and animal‑welfare‑focused livestock selling centres in Australia.

Outcross Agri‑Services played a direct and foundational role in the design of the Western Victoria Livestock Exchange (WVLX) at Mortlake, in the conceptual design, layout planning, livestock flow optimisation, and integration of best‑practice operational and animal‑welfare principles that underpin the facility’s state‑of‑the‑art infrastructure.

Purpose‑built as a fully undercover, soft‑floor facility, the design eliminates weather impacts, reduces dust, improves animal comfort and enhances safety for buyers, agents and staff. Wide, elevated walkways provide exceptional visibility and safe separation between people and livestock, while the ProWay‑engineered pen layout optimises stock flow, minimises stress and supports low‑pressure handling.

Integrated NLIS scanning, digital weighing systems and automated data capture streamline sale administration and ensure high levels of traceability and compliance. The site also incorporates modern effluent and stormwater systems, high‑capacity loading infrastructure and well‑planned traffic management, making Mortlake a benchmark for best‑practice saleyard design and a model for the next generation of livestock selling centres.

Outcross were integral to the design, operational management and site management of WVLX and SELX from 2016 until after the sites were sold in 2024. We engaged all staff, operational processes, infrastructure maintenance and effluent management and were also responsible for all technology, stakeholder engagement, compliance and risk management

SHEEP EID

OUTCROSS MAKES SHEEP EID SIMPLE AND COMPLIANT FOR SALEYARDS

THE CHALLENGE

The introduction of mandatory Sheep eID across Australia represented one of the biggest operational changes the saleyards industry has faced in decades. As states moved to implement new traceability legislation, saleyards were required to invest in new technology, infrastructure and operational processes to remain compliant. For many saleyard operators, the implementation process was complex. Government funding programs often required multiple quotations across separate categories including software, hardware, RFID equipment, networking, infrastructure and installation.

Outcross recognised that saleyards didn't need multiple suppliers—they needed one trusted partner. Drawing on our expertise across technology, consulting, project delivery and operational services, Outcross developed a complete end-to-end Sheep eID implementation model. Rather than sourcing and coordinating up to 15 separate quotations from multiple vendors, saleyards could engage Outcross to design, supply and implement the entire solution.

Our integrated approach included:

  • Project planning and business case development

  • Site design and infrastructure planning

  • Hardware procurement and installation

  • Stockyard software implementation and configuration

  • Staff training and operational support

  • Compliance processes and operational reviews

  • Ongoing technical support and maintenance

This streamlined procurement, reduced project complexity and gave saleyards confidence they would meet government funding and compliance requirements.

THE OUTCROSS SOLUTION

INDUSTRY IMPACT

Outcross successfully delivered Sheep eID solutions for a number of leading saleyards. These projects include 7 of the 8 largest sheep saleyards in Australia's eastern states. Beyond installing technology, Outcross has continued to support several facilities through ongoing compliance and operational services, particularly at Dubbo and Forbes, helping operators meet increasingly rigorous regulatory requirements.

THE OUTCOME

By engaging Outcross, saleyards receive far more than a technology installation.

They gain a strategic partner capable of delivering integrated solutions that reduce complexity, improve operational performance and ensure compliance with evolving industry requirements.

The Sheep eID rollout demonstrates how Outcross helps solve industry-wide challenges through practical innovation, combining technology, people and proven processes into one complete solution.
